Squawk 7500 is the transponder code associated with unlawful interference, including hijacking, of an aircraft. Selecting 7500 alerts air traffic control to a serious security situation through the aircraft's transponder system. The code is not a general distress code and should be used only according to the applicable procedure.
What it governs
The code provides an alert to ATC, but the pilot's actions depend on the situation, aircraft procedures, communications, and instructions. If a pilot selects the code accidentally, the pilot should follow ATC instructions and clarify the situation when able. A pilot should not select a security code as a test or to communicate an ordinary equipment problem.
The transponder signal may be unavailable or unreliable, so the code cannot replace other procedures. Pilots should follow the aircraft checklist and current official guidance. The FAA Aeronautical Information Manual and applicable security procedures provide more complete information.
Example
If an aircraft is subject to unlawful interference, the crew may select 7500 when able and appropriate. ATC can then coordinate a response while the crew manages the immediate situation and follows the aircraft's procedures. The crew should not use a simplified web definition as a substitute for those procedures.
Why it matters
Confusing 7500 with 7600 or 7700 can create an incorrect alert. 7600 relates to radio communication failure, and 7700 indicates an emergency when a more specific code does not apply. Pilots should confirm the selected code and mode during normal operations.
This entry is a terminology reference, not a security or emergency checklist. Follow current official instructions and the aircraft's approved procedures.
