Automatic terminal information service (ATIS) is a continuous recorded broadcast of airport weather, runway, approach, and other operational information. Each complete recording is assigned an identification letter, such as Information Alpha, so controllers and pilots can confirm which version they have received.
What it governs
An ATIS may include the airport name, time of the observation, wind, visibility, ceiling, temperature, dew point, altimeter setting, approaches and runways in use, braking action, NOTAMs, and instructions for contacting a particular control position. The broadcast changes when a significant update occurs, and the identifier advances through the alphabet.
ATIS is informational, not a clearance. A pilot listens before contacting clearance delivery, ground, or approach, then reports the identifier. The controller can provide an amended instruction if the information has changed.
Example
A pilot listens to the broadcast and hears Information Bravo. The pilot then contacts ground control and says, Cessna 123AB at the north ramp with Bravo, taxi for departure. If the pilot hears a later recording before takeoff, the newer identifier should be used.
Why it matters
Using the current ATIS reduces repeated transmission of routine information and helps the pilot prepare for the expected runway and procedure. The observation can become outdated quickly, especially during changing weather. A pilot should compare it with current displays and ask the controller when information is missing or unclear.
The FAA Aeronautical Information Manual and local airport publications describe applicable communication practices. ATIS does not replace a clearance, current charts, or the pilot's own weather review.
