Class D airspace is controlled airspace around an airport with an operating control tower. It usually extends from the surface to a published ceiling, but the shape and limits vary by airport. The chart and airport information identify the dimensions, frequency, and operating details.
What it governs
A pilot operating under VFR generally establishes two-way radio communication with the tower before entering Class D airspace. The pilot listens for the tower's instructions and follows the airport traffic pattern and runway information. Establishing communication does not mean every instruction has been issued, so the pilot remains responsible for understanding and complying with the clearance or instruction.
Class D airspace may revert to another class when the tower is closed. The chart, Chart Supplement, published ATIS or other information, and current notices determine the status. A nearby Class E surface area may have different entry and communication requirements.
Example
A VFR pilot approaching an airport with Class D airspace contacts the tower before reaching the boundary, reports location, altitude, aircraft type, and intentions, then follows the assigned entry or sequencing instructions. The pilot checks the current ATIS if available before calling.
Why it matters
The surface area protects the traffic flow around a towered airport and gives pilots a common communication point. A pilot who assumes the tower is open or closed without checking can use the wrong procedure.
Use current charts, airport information, and the FAA Aeronautical Information Manual. This entry does not describe a specific airport's local pattern or temporary status.
