Automated weather observing system (AWOS)
An automated weather observing system, or AWOS, reports airport weather such as wind, visibility, temperature, dew point, and pressure.

Automated weather observing system (AWOS) is an automated system that measures and reports weather at or near an airport. Depending on its configuration, an AWOS can provide wind direction and speed, visibility, cloud or ceiling information, temperature, dew point, and altimeter setting through a radio broadcast or other published source.
How it works
Sensors collect observations and a computer converts them into aviation weather information. The system may produce a coded observation or a voice broadcast. The specific capabilities and certification level vary by installation, so pilots should consult the published airport information rather than assume every AWOS reports the same elements.
An AWOS observation describes conditions at the sensor location and time. It does not forecast future weather. A METAR may be generated from an automated observation, but the report format and available elements depend on the station and applicable procedures.
Example
A pilot approaching an airport listens to the published AWOS frequency and hears wind from 210° at 8 knots, visibility 10 statute miles, temperature 18°C, dew point 11°C, and an altimeter setting of 30.05 inHg. The pilot compares that information with the chart, runway, terrain, and current traffic.
Why it matters
AWOS gives pilots a current local observation when a control tower or weather observer is not providing the same service. It can support arrival planning, but conditions may differ between the sensor and another part of the airport or route. The issue time and station location remain important.
Use current official weather sources and the applicable airport publication. An automated observation does not replace a forecast, pilot judgment, or a required weather briefing. See the NOAA Aviation Weather Center for aviation weather products.
