Overview
The Diamond DA40 NG is a four-seat, fixed-gear, single-engine land airplane used for flight training and personal transport. Its Austro Engine AE300 diesel powerplant, composite airframe, low-wing view, and modern cockpit give it a different systems and training context from the Cessna and Piper trainers in this database.
This record covers the DA40 NG with the AE300 installation. The earlier DA40 TDI and later equipment packages must be checked against their own flight manuals. Avionics, options, interior equipment, and the aircraft's current empty weight also affect useful load and center of gravity.
Performance
The model basis lists 125 kt cruise and 720 nm range. These figures are book values under the source assumptions. Temperature, altitude, wind, loading, fuel planning, engine condition, and power setting affect actual results.
The climb references separate angle and rate. VX 59 KIAS favors altitude gained over distance, while VY 68 KIAS favors the greatest rate of altitude gain. The manual's charts should be read with the applicable weight and atmospheric conditions. A calculator can help explain density altitude, but the current flight manual supplies the aircraft-specific performance data.
V-speeds
The reference schedule lists VNE 154 KIAS, VNO 129 KIAS, and VA 108 KIAS at the stated model basis. Maneuvering speed changes with weight. The flap limit is VFE 108 KIAS for this record.
The VX, VY, and VA glossary entries provide general definitions. The current AFM, cockpit markings, and aircraft records remain the controlling references.
Weight and balance
The published useful load of 838 lb is meaningful in a four-seat diesel trainer because occupants, fuel, and baggage compete for a limited margin. The 39.6 gal fuel capacity does not make every four-person loading scenario available. Actual empty weight and equipment can reduce the usable payload further.
Use current empty weight, arms, fuel quantity, occupant weights, and baggage stations in the loading calculation. The weight and balance calculator is for training and reference only.
Training notes
The DA40 NG exposes students to a low-wing view, composite-airframe care, modern avionics, and diesel engine management. Those systems can support a structured transition from a basic trainer, but they also create aircraft-specific checklist and limitations work. The fixed landing gear simplifies one system while the engine and cockpit require their own study.
Variants
The DA40 TDI and DA40 NG are not one interchangeable data set. Their engine installations and fuel systems differ. Later XLT equipment packages can also change the weight and documentation basis. Keep separate MDX records when a variant has its own meaningful source and performance data.
Sources
The structured values use the Diamond DA40 NG Airplane Flight Manual for the Austro Engine AE300 basis, with configuration context from EASA Type Certificate Data Sheet A.022. Confirm the applicable revision, serial range, and aircraft records before using any figure.
